Brief History of the Carnival Carnival is an old tradition linked to Lent, which began several hundred years ago during the Middle Ages. Lent are the 40 days that Jesus fasted and prayed in the desert. For this reason many Christians abstained from eating meat and practice their vices during that period. As a result the Carnival began as a celebration of excess and revelry to have fun and let off steam with parties before Lent. The last day of Carnival is known as Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras or Martes de Carnaval. And the first day of Lent is called Ash Wednesday, held 40 days (excluding Sundays) before Easter Saturday.
